the best rye bread in vancouver
I have only sampled one loaf and can certify that its the authentic German-style rye bread. I hope they have their own store.
I have gone in twice. The first time was the summer of 2010. I went in to try their rumballs, I only got one as it was obvious to me they did not want to serve me.
Today, November 1 2011, I went in again to get a loaf of bread and as I went in, a lady was behind the counter, saw me come in and as I said "good morning" she barely breathed her answer to me and went into the back. I waited for a minute, or so pretending I was looking at the items and she did not come back out. I left.
The only reason I have gone to this bakery is because it is close to the gym I go to and so it is on my way home. BUT NEVER AGAIN!
I belong to three minority groups, I cannot think of just one reason as to why the treatment, but three.
I went in and asked for a danish, noticing there was one burnt one and about four nice ones. I know they try and pawn the burnt ones off on people they won't complain, and I didn't complain, but I'm not gonig back. This thing is burnt to hell and shouldn't have been sold in the first place. At least give the nice ones out first. I can't beleive I paid for this.
I have been going to the Strawberry Baker for a least 15 years or more. As I am residing in Coquirlam, I pick up Breads, Buns, Sweets, etc on a regular basis. There Breads are outstandinging (my favourite the landbrot) and so are the buns, sweets, actuall everything. I also order ahead, and, at times the staff helps me carrying my purchases to my car. I recommended the Strawberry Bakery to many of my friends and they are all delighted with their products/
Best German Ryes east of Toronto.
They "invented" the Portuguese bun! (I should say perfected).
Their breads are delicious and cheap. Crusts, textures, aroma, flavours are tops. Their Stollen available only around Christmas and in limited supply is the best in town. Highest recommendation from this bread connoisseur.
Been coming here for over 15 years for there Landbrot. The best bread other than in Germany Even thou they changed owners they finally got it right again as the bread did not taste quite right after the change over. The buns are awesome as well ,as for the other bakery items i can't say anything as i did not try them. The people that work there are rood sometimes and very hard to understand but the Bread is The Best..
To the reviewer who posted on Dec 1, 2012:
While it is true that the majority of German rye breads are baked EAST of Toronto (as in Germany), these breads are not - given that Vancouver happens to be WEST of Toronto.
Nonetheless, Strawberry bread is awesome; a favourite in our family and among our friends.
It is Hungarian bakery!
